How do we choose our Special Places? The simplest answer is that we look for people and places that we like. But the reality is more complicated. It would be silly of us to look for just one type of house or one type of
person that pleases us for, while pleasing ourselves, we would leave a whole army of you disappointed. We
nevertheless look for specialness: in the owner's personality, in architecture, furniture, decoration, history,
food, surroundings, garden or peace. Each B&B in this book is a fascinating cocktail of those things.
At the heart of our choice is the owner. We have turned down the finest and most comfortable houses
because the owner is grumpy or aloof, or the atmosphere cold. Equally we have less-than-perfect houses –
some even slightly dusty or chaotic or crumbling – but with owners to whom we have felt so drawn that the minor negatives were immediately forgotten.
There are many near-perfect mixes of magical architecture, enviable garden, handsome furniture, beautiful
art and wonderfully comfortable beds and bathrooms to rave about. Good taste, generosity and kindness excite us, whether in our castles, cottages, farmhouses or bungalows.
We like owners who are generous: a drink before dinner, the offer of a lift to a pub, a simple, early supper for
your children, help with planning your day. Many of them will go out of their way to be flexible. We know that
an encounter with genuine kindness and an easy welcome live longer in the memory than any amount of five starred 'facilities'
